花球啦啦操是由運動員手持花球完成的一項運動，花球也是啦啦操這項運動所特有的最具代表性的運動器械。在花球啦啦操中，最常用的也是最主要的基本動作就是手持花球的36個基本手位，主要是根據運動員的動作形態來命名。
現代啦啦操是以團隊的形式出現，技巧啦啦操結合Dance（舞蹈）、Cheer（口號）、Partner Stunts（舞伴特技，是指托舉的難度動作）、Tumbling（技巧）、Basket Toss（轎子拋）、Pyramid（疊羅漢）、Jump（跳躍）等動作技術。
配合音樂、服裝、隊型變化及標示物品（如彩球、口號板、喇叭與旗幟）等要素，遵守比賽規則中對性別、人數、時間限制、安全規則等規定進行比賽的運動，稱之為競技啦啦隊，亦可稱為啦啦隊。
競技啦啦隊分為技巧啦啦隊和舞雀喊蹈啦啦隊。其中技巧啦啦隊包括Mixed（男女混合組）、All-Female（全女子組）和Partner stunts（舞伴特技）；舞蹈啦啦隊又包括Pom(花球）、High kick(高踢腿）、Jazz(爵士）和Prop(道具）四個組別。
代表世界啦慧指啦操最高水平的全美啦啦操隊錦標賽參賽標準：隊伍人數要在6~32人之間，分四個組別進頃碧野行比賽，分別是業余組、中學組、大學組和全明星組。
